For years I’ve dreamt of going to the San Diego Comic Con. I attend the one held in New York yearly and have recently started going to Wizard Con in Philadelphia but San Diego Comic Con is THE ONE; the cream of the crop. Last year, my sister and brother-in-law somehow snagged tickets for themselves which then upped my chances of obtaining tickets for this year’s. Clearly, we lucked out and finally got ours! We couldn’t get a four-day pass but wound up getting tickets for Thursday, Friday and Sunday instead which was fine by me.
Let me start of by saying San Diego is beautiful. The weather is amazing, the people are pretty chill and the atmosphere of the city is one that matches best with my personality: laid back. For a majority of my time there, I was in awe. The whole city embraces Comic Con. Whether you’re visiting a restaurant or riding the trolley comic con is everywhere.
I really didn’t know what to expect my first day. I knew it was going to be crazy, I knew there were going to be a lot of people, and I knew there would be a lot to see but I couldn’t have wished for it to go any smoother than it did.
The first few hours, I spent my time toy hunting & trying to get all the “exclusives”. The Funko line was a disaster so I wasn’t going to waste my time waiting for hours on end. Instead, I stopped by Kidrobot and BAIT. I managed to get a majority of what I wanted and headed over to the Last Gasp booth for the Ron English signing. So far this was a success.
After Ron I stumbled across a booth selling tickets for a photo-op with the living legend, the one and only Mr. Stan Lee. This was a great surprise because I’ve always wanted to meet him and I wasn’t even expecting to. I picked up tickets for myself and Paola and decided to leave the convention center for lunch. What could be better than a Super Hero-themed menu at the Broken Yolk Cafe? Not a damn thing. Stuffed & barely able to move, we decided to go back to the con for a few more hours then later had some donuts at the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck. First Day = Success.
Our second one was just as magical as the first. While waiting in line to meet Stan Lee, Conan O’Brien happened to be signing autographs at a stand nearby. Now, I was a little bummed because I had previously tried to get tickets (and failed) to one of the four tapings he was doing in San Diego. Little did I know that when he was done signing autographs, my girlfriend would Ninja her way into getting a photo with him. She pretty much blocked his exit; I swear it was a thing of magic. She figured which way he would be coming and BOOM! Selfie with Conan. A few minutes later we finally got our photo with Stan the Man and we happily walked around for the rest of the day.
Our final day at SDCC was Sunday. It consisted of last-minute toy purchases, a selfie with Alien and a stroll through the Walking Dead booth (which might I mention, still has me hurting from laughter). I won’t even get into detail on the wonderful dinners that we shared, our drive to La Jolla and Balboa Park, and a beautiful afternoon at Coronado Island. This trip couldn’t have gone any better and I hope that every time I go back to San Diego, it’s as magical and unbelievably beautiful as my first time.
